702nd Tank Battalion “Red Devils”
Rolling On
The 702nd Tank Battalion was activated February 9th, 1943, at Camp Campbell, Kentucky at Cadre Strength. The unit entered the Tennessee Maneuvers on November 16th 1943. It arrived at Camp Phillips, Kansas on January 19th, 1944 and trained with the 79th Infantry Division. The Battalion departed Camp Shanks, N.Y. and arrived in Liverpool, England on April 30th, 1944. It landed over Utah Beach on August 6th, 1944. The unit was assigned to the 80th Infantry Division, Third Army and assisted in closing the Falaise Gap as it’s first action. It was awarded four Battle Campaigns and ended the war in Austria. Inactivation took place on September 19th, 1945. Unofficial casualties were 341, of these 68 were Killed In Action, 255 Wounded and 18 Missing.
Thirty-eight of our comrades remain buried in or near the ground upon which they gave their last measure of devotion to their God and country. They are as follows:
