John Pertschi's great-niece adds the following: "The pictures of him with the “orphan” girl are especially touching. Uncle John told me about her. The men in the group named her Victoria, and in his photo albums were those pictures of her with the appellation “My daughter Victoria.” He tried to adopt her and bring her back to the States, but because he was single, it was not allowed. He then tried to get it through before he was sent back stateside by having his mom adopt her. It didn’t go through before he shipped out, and he never found her again. He tried for many years to find her. As he told me this story, he wept openly, crying out for his daughter, his Victoria. I think it was the true secret grief of his life. I loved him very much. Thank you for honoring him." |
