Roster Of Known Men From

"A" Company, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division

Compiled And Contributed By Jeffrey Wignall

Edited By Terry D. Janes

Thanks to Paul Clark of Hometown Service Company for his kind assistance in converting the original database into something useable.  Thanks especially to Jeff Wignall, whose tireless efforts resulted in this list.  I present it here in hopes that it may help friends or family.  When reading this list, please remember two things:

1.      This is only a partial roster of the men who were assigned to this company throughout it's service in World War Two.  There were roughly 160 per company under normal conditions.  There are 737 names listed here.  These men were not all in the company at once, but cycled in and out as casualties or replacements, or both.  This is just ONE company, in ONE battalion, in ONE regiment, in ONE division.  This gives you a sample of the scope how big the numbers really were.

2.      They were mostly 18-year-old boys, whom we call men.  They fought and died as men, but they were just kids chronologically.  They could have been your neighbor, or brother, or son.  Some of them were "old-timers", and some lasted a couple days and were dead.  Many were wounded on multiple occasions.  When you understand the hell they endured, you might ask, "Where do we get such men?"  This list shows that they came from your town, and mine.  We owe them very much.

John R. Moran, Record states: "WIA October, AWOL 26 November, 1944, Arrested by MP in Toul, France 28 November, 1944, AWOL 29 November, 1944"  John R. Moran himself, writes, "I have four days bad time on my discharge, and even that was under extenuating circumstances.  Additionally, I was not picked up by M.P.'s, but turned myself in at a replacement depot.  Also, I was slightly wounded two other times that do not appear on my records, once at Kassel and another time later in Germany.  Except for the above, my time in the hospital and return to action which took place in December of that year, prior to Bastogne, I was with Company A, 318th Regiment from desert maneuvers in Arizona, through Austria to Bavaria, where with points, I was repatriated to the 90th Division to return to the States on January 3, 1946.  I was 22 at that time and happy to be home."  Historian's note: It was common in W.W. II for soldiers to be listed in the Morning Reports as AWOL for a variety of legitimate reasons.  If it were not legitimate, punishment could be severe, including the death penalty.  In this case no punishment was meted out of any importance.
