Request Re: 80th In Czechoslovakia
80th Division Vets-My name is Matthew Kime; I am a Captain in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. I am writing a book about the US Army’s liberation and subsequent postwar occupation of Czechoslovakia from May to December 1945. I found the story of Willard Snyder's experience with the Russian officer in Czechoslovakia posted in the Troubleshooters Mailbag of the 80th Division Veterans Association. This and a document from the National Archives is the first that I have ever heard about the Blue Ridge in Czechoslovakia. I speak the Czech language and have spent an extensive amount of time in the Czech Republic, most recently for the 60th Anniversary liberation ceremonies on temporary duty with the US Defense Attaché Office. My intent is to preserve the memory of US vets in Czechoslovakia. I would also like to tell the Blue Ridge story there as well. What units of the division were there? I recently came across a document from the National Archives, a memorandum from the Assistant Division Commander of the 80th, a general Roffe, who talked about Blue Ridge soldiers guarding the Metternicht Castle in Marienbad, Czechoslovakia. I would like to get into contact with any vets who served there during the occupation. I look forward to hearing from you. My contact information is: Matthew Kime, 110 Luke Street, Fort Huachuca, Arizona 85613 Telephone: (520) 452-0034 Email: lt2mk@rocketmail.com
