Sweating It Out
The Honorable Life And Times Of Al Durbin
Introduction
|
In the Spring of 1994 the media were beginning to have stories about the upcoming 50th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. My Dad had landed on the Normandy beach about 7 weeks after D-Day, and immediately went into action with General Patton's Third Army against the Germans. I asked my Dad to write down his memoirs of what he was doing at that time.
Those memoirs are what we have in the first section of this book. Dad titled it "Sweating It Out", and that gave us the name we used. When Dad finished that first part, I asked him to do more. I had always enjoyed listening as Dad told these stories at family gatherings, over the years, since I was a little kid. Now that I had my own daughter, I wanted them recorded for her future reference. Dad has included numerous war stories and memories of Army life, and also some personal and family history.
The book is not chronological, it jumps back and forth, and there is some repetition. Dad wrote parts, and sometimes, before Rose and I could get a section transcribed and returned, he'd start a new part, without reference to what he had already written. But we are very happy with it, and we hope you enjoy it also.
We honor the service to our country by our Dad, Al Durbin, and all the millions of Americans who participated in the "Big One", and all other times in our nation's history.
