Ebensee Nazi Labor Camp

Austria 1945


The attached photos were taken in Gmunden Austria in 1945 by Lt. Richard Swope of Reading PA of the 80th U.S. Infantry Division that fought in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe Campaigns during 1944-1945. The U.S. 80th Division liberated the Buchenwald and Ebensee Concentration Camps. (Nearest towns to Ebensee are Gmunden and Bad Ischl.) Lt. Swope was the Communications Platoon Officer for the Headquarters Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 318th Regiment. A Battalion Headquarters job was to direct three 200 man rifle companies and one 200 man heavy weapons company in battle. The three infantry companies rotate going into attack and the heavy weapons company is positioned to support the attack. During the war Richard Swope was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Silver Star medal, the Bronze Star medal, two Purple Heart medals, and a Battlefield Commission to Lieutenant, along with the Good Conduct medal, European Campaign with four battle stars medal, and WWII Victory medal.
