The Mauretania is shown here docked at the C&O Pier, at Newport News, Va. In September 1942. On board, were 2036 German prisoners who were turned over to the Canadian military. The Mauretania is well known to many G.I.'s, including the 80th Infantry Division and 702nd Tank Battalion as their transport from the United States to Britain. In this photo, you can just make out the name on the prow, which was painted-over for wartime use, for camouflage purposes. |
