Rudy Tomasik
80th Division, 319th Regiment I & R

Rudy Tomasik, former member of the 80th Division, 319th Regiment I & R Team
|
My friend Rudy Tomasik was kind enough to share his wartime photos with us. Rudy had a reputation for being a solid, dependable and brave soldier as a member of the 80th Division, 319th Regiment I & R (Intelligence & Reconnaissance) team during World War Two. The I & R team were the guys who spent most of the war out in front of the division, locating the enemy, locating clear roadways, etc. so the division could follow. You had to be a brave man indeed to be in I & R. Where you went, the enemy was ever-present, and you had precious little with which to fight back. While you had a division behind you, sometimes that back-up was a long ways behind you, so you had to fend for yourself. The photo above shows Rudy today, still very fit and active. Yes ladies, this handsome devil is single! Of the following photos, Rudy tells me that they represent the worst of what he had shot during the war. He had sent these photos home by mail to his mother. The best of what he had shot he kept with him, in his duffle bag. Unfortunately, some scoundrel stole his bag while he was traveling by train in Europe after the war ended. If the following photos represent the worst of Rudy's wartime photography, I sure wish that I could have seen what was stolen from him. As the French say, Ceci le vie! |
