Privateer Booty

U.S. Capped Liberty Half Dollar

John Reich designed this capped head concept of Liberty.  Reich became an engraver for the mint after having been freed from a bond of servitude by a mint official.  Weight: 13.48 grams.  Composition: .8924 silver, .1076 copper.  Approximate diameter 32.5mm.  Edge marked "Fifty Cents or Half A Dollar".  No silver dollars were minted in 1812, and the last issue had been 1804 when 19,570 dollars were minted.  Dollars were not minted again until 1836.

James Madison

(March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836)

4th President of the United States (1809–1817)

From Wikipedia: "Known as the "Father of the Constitution," James Madison played a leading role in the creation of the United States Constitution in 1787 and, with Alexander Hamilton, was the chief expounder of its meaning in the Federalist Papers (1788).   Working closely with Thomas Jefferson, he created the Democratic-Republican Party in the mid-1790's.  As Jefferson's Secretary of State he handled the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the nation's size.  After trying to avoid war with Britain and France, he declared war on Britain in 1812."
