1942 (January) Willys slat grill jeep

600,000+ jeeps were manufactured during the Second World War. With the exception of prototypes, they were manufactured by Willys and Ford.  This jeep was sourced in the US as a basket case and restored over three years. This particular vehicle is one of the first 25,000 Willys produced jeeps, with the distinctive flat metal front grill (as opposed to the later stamped metal grills). There were a number of differences between the Willys and Ford produced models – but all parts were interchangeable.  As Willys produced engines for other uses (generators, search lights etc.) the engine and chassis numbers do not match (as with the Ford GPW), this vehicle appears to have its original engine, axles (dated 12.12.41), original gearbox (dated A 12 42 – Jan 12th 1942) and body.  This vehicle is presented as a vehicle belonging to the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division.
