Battle Of The Bulge

 

December 5; 10:00pm-Germans being pushed out on all fronts-resistance light.

 

December 6; 1:00pm-platoon reports considerable digging in north Folkinger (Q3861).  Number of men undetermined.  Prisoner of War states 365th Division Gas Depot located at Grossinwald, on both sides of the road at Q414605.  7:00pm-light harassing fire received in the division area during the period.  2nd Cavalry platoon to Forbach made contact with Germans in prepared positions.  Folkingen was cleared of Germans.

 

December 7; 8:30am-prepare to move to Valmont.  9:30am-arrive at Valmont and set up Command Post.  We're now separated from Division, and going through a period of reorganization and maintenance.  Captain Nordstrom is operating as S-2 and Liaison with Division.

 

December 11; Snow last night.

 

December 18; 10:00am-German plane flew low over area-AA guns, AT guns, and .50 caliber machine guns let loose-no hits observed.

 

December 19; 10:00am-"enemy counterattacking on a 60 mile front near Luxembourg.  1,500 paratroopers have been dropped after a counterbattery artillery.  Noon-we are moving to area near Luxembourg to be in reserve.  10:00pm-arrive at Esch near Luxembourg.  Midnight-stay overnight-after gassing up and men checking vehicles-trip uneventful, no German action.

December 20; 9:00am-move to Luxembourg.  11:00am-arrive in Luxembourg-battalion with us.

 

December 21; 11:00am-F.M.#5 received-report that three prisoners in U.S. uniforms apprehended-reveal that there are 150 enemy in American uniforms behind 1st Army lines.  Departed 17 December in American peeps-mission to destroy headquarters' communications.  3:00pm-Germans continue attack on a 20-mile front, with a 20-mile penetration.  10:00pm-airplanes overhead-AA fire barrage.

 

December 22; 8:00am-attack against Germans took off at 6:00am.  Attack going successfully.  10:00am-German resistance slight.  "A", "B", "C" and "D" Companies advancing northward above Mirsch.  Noon-commanding officer out checking progress.  1:00pm-order to prepare for a move to Mirsch.  3:00pm-move to Mirsch.  6:00pm-"C" Company knocked out two half-tracks at Merzig.  Merzig received light mortar fire.  Hayseed reports Merzig clear of Germans.  Prisoners of War captured in Niederfuelen, identified the following units: 13 from 13th Company 915th Regiment, 1 from 4th Company 965th Regiment, 1 from Regimental Headquarters Company 915th Regiment.  7:31pm-Haggle-80th Recon. Cavalry reports Germans counterattack consisting of one battalion of infantry in the vicinity of Saurebarn at 4:02pm.  Attack repulsed with one tank knocked out.  10:00pm-estimated 300 Germans in the vicinity of Ettlebruck-initially opposed our attack with small arms fire-two German tanks encountered in town and two German anti-tank guns were active in covering the town."
