The Heart Of Germany

 

April 3-Near Dissen 1790-2:00am-All Volkssturm were called to duty four days ago in Kassel, and the town was declared a "fortress city". 

 

2:40am-A 105mm gun is located at 288984. 

 

5:22am-The 3rd Company, 3465th Fortress Infantry Battalion was deployed along the river, in the town of Niedervellmar at 2107.  On their right, is the 1st Company.  On their left is a anti-aircraft unit. 

 

5:23am-A few rounds of mortar hit near Dennhausen. 

 

8:35am-At 8:00am, three tanks were on the northwest edge of Vollmarshausen.  German snipers are in the woods east of town, and at the north and northeast edge of town twenty rounds of 88mm anti-aircraft fire airbursts at 8:00am. 

 

9:33am-German infantry and five tanks counterattacked from the northwest of Wolmarshausen 2797, at 9:24am. 

 

9:34am-Three German tanks at Wolmarshausen 2797 withdrew to Ochshausen. 

 

1:15pm-A large German infantry column is moving north at 305015. 

 

1:17pm-Considerable demolition in the center of Kassel.  Three heavy explosions have occurred in the past half-hour. 

 

4:01pm-Five German planes were north of Oberzwehren at 3:57pm. 

 

4:09pm-Five German planes flying north, strafed Oberzwehren. 

 

4:10pm-German infantry are dug-in at 229995, and are being fired on. 

 

6:52pm-Two German tanks (possibly Tigers) are located at 254001.  An unknown number of German tanks are at 268004.  German troops are dug-in at 245998. 

 

6:53pm-The road is mined at 170027.  7:10pm-A German anti-tank gun is located near 094055.  German troops are on the high ground north and east of 120060. 

 

Midnight-Fierce resistance from small arms, machine guns and direct fire was encountered during the morning, as we advanced on Kassel.  One counterattack of five tanks, supported by an unknown number of infantry was received at 9:20am, from the northwest of Vallmorshausen.  It was repulsed without loss of ground.  During the afternoon, resistance slackened somewhat, as our forces entered Kassel and cleared two thirds of the town.  Pockets of resistance in the city are being mopped up.  An estimated 1,260 P.W.'s were captured during the period.
