Battle In The Mud

From the S-2 Journal: October 2nd;

"4:55pm-two enemy planes bombed west slope of Hill 340 (U854274).  8:19pm-flares reported in the vicinity of Morville.  9:00pm-received G-2 Periodic Report #47-enemy successfully resisted towards Serrieres (U8628) during morning October 2nd ."

From the Service Company Diary: 2 October;

"After dashing across France in a spectacular "Patton" fashion, this inactivity is both restful and disappointing.  The Moselle River was crossed at Dieulouard, and the bridgehead expanded about twenty miles, some five to ten miles deep.  We never expected to stop so suddenly and the crossing into Germany has now been delayed indefinitely.  Today showed unmistakable signs of winter.  A short hail storm came up and then after returning from a shower, Captain Roberts informed us he had donned the "itchy ones".  After spending last winter in Tennessee, and along the Cumberland River, no one relishes the idea of spending this winter under almost the same circumstances.

Pvt. Marian Nielodwski was assigned to the company today, adding to the ever growing list of new games on the roster.  M/Sgt. Lowell Smith isn't feeling too well, as the last letter from his wife informed him that she had spent the family fortune on a farm.  Maybe he can get in cahoots with Cook, George Satirkys, as his wife spent the bank roll on a restaurant.  Looks like big business going on at home.  The tactical situation remains static.  Our Drivers are returning from the combat units after four or five days, with practically full loads.  Well, anyway, we are set for the next big push."

From the S-2 Journal: October 3rd;

"9:30am-Battalion Staff Meeting on attack plan.  9:45am-message from G-2; two tanks observed at U853333, and three tanks at U854329.  Noon-Report interdictory artillery fire received between Hill 340 (U8527) and Morey (U8426), from Mt. Toulon.  2:00pm-three German planes observed in area of 319th Combat Team.  4:00pm-two road blocks at U84654360 and U95003945.  10:00pm-Germans continue to harass our positions with mortar and artillery fire.  Sivry was cleared of Germans after house to house fighting."

From the Service Company Diary: 3 October;

"This continued inactivity has everyone rested and on edge for the next phase.  Like the lull before the storm, everything is quiet and peaceful.  Meanwhile, the rain continues to fall, and the mud gets deeper.  Captain Grimm visited the rear echelon and interested us in a few stories of the fighting.  His humor was still very good and everyone still has respect for, and faith in his ability.  Rumors were circulating that passes were to be authorized and ears perked up at the mention of Nancy.  The popularity of the Battalion Supply, and the ration sergeant, S/Sgt. Joe Rizzone dropped a bit as another issue of "K" rations was on the menu.  Good thing there is plenty of potato fields close-by."

From the S-2 Journal: October 4th;

"7:00am-German artillery battery located at U928310 and U919309.  German mortar position located at U874307 and in southern most building in Manoncourt (U8731) at 7:30am.  Green flares observed on southeast slope of Mt. Toulon (U8728) and the east side of Sivry (U8727) at 7:30am.  6:00pm-units in contact: 6th Company, 1119th Grenadier Regiment.  8:00pm- General summary-Germans attacked Sivry at 3:20am, following an artillery preparation, and have been fighting in Sivry for the balance of the period."
