The first entry of the Service Company diary dated November 1, 1944 (Wednesday):
". . . laundry went in today and a few of the men had showers. 'B' rations today included roast beef which was excellent. We wound up the day with a movie."
Then on the following day:
Thursday, November 2: "The first issue of overshoes came through and a number of men are now sporting them around. So far, only sizes 8 and 9 have come out. Evidently, the bigger sizes will follow soon. Battalion Maintenance is busy with a German tank, being prepared for the engineers. They plan to run it into a river, to support a bridge. We had steak for supper. It was a little tough, but delicious. The kitchen crew is doing a fine job, and everyone hopes it continues.
3 November; "We had a little sunshine today, although the weather was a little cold. Winter is really on the way. One thing for sure, we will appreciate the fact that the rain has stopped. Snow may be in the air, but we hope it stays dry a little longer. General Patton visited the 80th Division today, and the Battalion Staff, plus the Company Commanders heard him speak. From all indications, he was very optimistic. Hope he knows something." |
