Penetrating Hitler's Seigfried Line

 

Feb.10 -10:05am-I&R reports three mortars firing from north to south in the vicinity of 978423 at 8:50am.  11:25am-Small arms fire received from 986400.  11:30am-Six rockets hit in the vicinity of 965407 at 11:00am.  Two SP (self propelled) guns in the vicinity of Bollendorf.  11:37am-P.O.W. reports that from north of pillbox at 978423, the road and valley north to Busdorf is mined.  12:01pm-Report from I&R -visibility miserable at 9:30am.  Eight rounds of mortar fire estimated as 120mm fell in the vicinity of 9774112 at 10:30am.  Thirty rounds of nebelwerfer fell in the vicinity of 989404 at 10:50am.  1:17pm-Pillbox at 955440-nine Germans came out with a white flag following direct artillery fire.  1:33pm-Heavy caliber artillery falling in the vicinity of Wallendorf.  2:00pm-Two German tanks observed moving into Cruchten from the southeast at 1:45pm.  2:05pm-Artillery moved up river from Wallendorf to the north.  2:14pm-Eight rockets received at 969419 at 1:20pm.  2:15pm-Troops dug in, were observed on the hill at 971432-number unknown.  2:20pm-Two German tanks coming from the east at 980453.  Rocket position at 955453-direction of fire believed to be south.  2:22pm-Fifteen Germans surrendered at the pillbox at 951446, due to heavy firing.  Effective fire on pillbox at 970430.  Twenty Germans observed coming out.  3:30pm-Trains of the 1st Battalion, 36th Regiment located at Obergeller 9453 on the evening of 8 February.  Eighteen S-mines in the woods 952424.  Ten S-mines in low growth at 950425.  The destroyed bridge at Dillengen is mined at the eastern approach.  The road is mined from there, north to Tefuebach 9841, with mines on the shoulders of the road.  P.O.W. walked over in the center of the road without encountering any mines.  3:52pm-Three rounds from a tank hit in the vicinity of 9445 at 2:45pm.  4:02pm-I&R reports two German light tanks traveling north at high speed, spotted at 985453 at 2:30pm.  4:05pm-I&R reports a battery of nebelwerfer observed firing from the wooded draw in the vicinity of 964465.  Eight rounds from the above battery hit 977408 at 2:05pm.  4:29pm-Three guns on Mk. IV chassis' traveling southeast, went out of sight over hill at 984442-two entered Cruchten.  Two observed leaving town at 2:28pm.  4:29pm-Tank knocked out north of Cruchten.  4:32pm-Twelve rounds of nebelwerfer fell in the vicinity of Wallendorf at 4:10pm.  4:33pm-Heavy traffic reported on the road at 9650, Lahr south to Huttengen at 2:50pm.  4:42pm-Air Recon reports a large ammo dump east of Cruchten.  5:40pm- fourteen rounds of direct fire fell at P954423.  9:00pm-Our troops met heavy resistance in their efforts to enlarge the bridgehead area through the period.  Heavy artillery and nebelwerfer was received at the crossing sites in the vicinity of Wallendorf and Dillengen.

 

 

Feb.11 -9:00am-German artillery located in the woods at L076415.  10:00am-Identified P.O.W.’s from the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 13th Companies, 915th Regiment, and 7th, and 14th Companies, 116th Regiment, and 4th and 1st Companies of the 1st Battalion, 36th Regiment, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 14th Companies, 316th Regiment, 212th Division and 6th Battery, 1352nd Artillery Regiment.  10:03am-Five Germans seen walking east into woods at 989441 at 8:25am.  11:00am-Twelve rounds of mortar and one round of artillery landed at 964437.  11:09am-Fifteen rounds of mortar hit at Wallendorf at 10:55am.  Three rounds of artillery hit at Begebach.  11:51am-German position occupied by four men at 990430-changed relief at 9:45am.  9:50am-Large camouflage net in clump of trees at 967453-believed ammo dump or gun position.  Eight Germans came down the road from the east and entered the dugout at 952445 at 9:05am.  11:59am-Twenty four rounds of nebelwerfer hit Bliesdorf at 11:20am.  12:01pm-German attack in the vicinity of 9844 was broken up by artillery.  12:16pm-One man observed leading horse, drawing two vehicles on the road northeast of Cruchten-also five men coming from the northeast at 11:10am.  12:18pm-German truck and horse-drawn vehicle-carry ammo and approximately seventy five infantry at 935458, came from the northeast-observed at 11:10am.  12:20pm-Nine Germans were observed going north, and one horse-drawn vehicle going south on the road 973503.  12:25pm-Identified P.O.W.'s from 5th, 6th, and 7th Companies, 1128th Regiment, 560th Division, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Companies, 915th Regiment, 352nd Division, and 2nd March Battalion S.P. Purpos 891 ZBZ 1st, 212th Division Replacement and Training Battalion.  12:50pm-German counterattack forming at 982446, including tanks.  1:01pm-Vehicles and troops moving south and west towards our front, with Lahr and Oberstigen particularly mentioned.  1:30pm-Nebelwerfer fire from 956453 at 12:37pm.  1:43pm-I&R Observation Post #1 reports approximately twenty rounds of German artillery between 964432 and 962435 at 11:10am.  Approximately sixteen rounds of nebelwerfer landed in Bliesdorf at 11:15am.  2:11pm-Troops in single file came out of woods approximately 1,500 yards northwest of Cruchten and moving toward town-number unknown.  2:20pm-I&R report from Observation Post #1-Approximately forty rounds of nebelwerfer hit Bliesdorf at 11:20am.  Approximately thirty five men-leaving pillbox for underground tunnel at 973436, at 11:54am.  2:22pm-I&R Observation Post #1 reports three Germans outside of pillbox at 961443.  Also, one German digging in at 963435, at 12:15pm.  2:26pm-Thirty men at 9848 moving south toward Hammerdingen.  2:29pm-Approximately two squads of Germans are in foxholes and dugouts on the east slope of Hill 304 at 12:50pm.  2:38pm-I&R Observation Post #1 reports twenty-five Germans moving southwest from 964435 and enter pillbox at 968434 at 2:10pm.  3:13pm- nebelwerfer fire from 932458.  Direct fire from the south at 2:25pm.  3:36pm-Nine German concentrations hit Hoesdorf between 2:00 and 3:15pm, from the north.  3:45pm-P.O.W.  reports minefield in meadow leading out of Shankwieler toward the southwest at approximately L023449.  4:22pm-Nebelwerfer battery at L007429.  Anti-tank gun, believed to be 75mm, located near L001425.  I&R Observation Post #1 reports twenty German infantry moving southeast on the road from Huttengen to Hammerdingen at 2:10pm.  Twelve rounds of nebelwerfer came from the north, and hit near Beisdorf.  4:46pm-I&R Observation Post #2 reports thirty rounds of estimated 105mm and 120mm mortar fell in Hoesdorf and vicinity.  4:48pm-I&R #2 reports ten German artillery shells estimated as 150mm hit in Hoesdorf and vicinity at 1:20pm, from a 10-degree azimuth, at 4,000 to 6,000 yards.  4:52pm-Five rounds of artillery hit 971414 at 4:00pm.  4:55pm-Heavy mortar was in position on 9 Feb., at edge of woods at 995442.  Infantry howitzer or artillery battery near 997439.  Anti-tank gun in the ditch south of the road, approximately L024450.  Nebelwerfer at approximately L007429.  Anti-tank gun-75mm, near L001425.  5:06pm-Three rounds of artillery hit on the road at 979416, at 5:00pm.  5:16pm-P.O.W. states nebelwerfer is located at 972487 and P980475.  120mm mortar located at L008417.  105mm battery located at 999445.  5:34pm-Large fire in Frielingen at 3:30pm.  7:00pm-P.O.W. states that the 1st Battalion, 316th Regiment, 212th Division came into present position from P947439 to 965435 on the night of 6-7 February with the mission to relieve the 1st Battalion, 915th Regiment upon our attack.  Order rescinded and battalion was used to reinforce the 1st Battalion, 915th Regiment.  Eleven P.O.W.'s from 116th Regiment, 9th Division, state that the regiment left bunker near Demund, on the evening of 7 Feb., to relieve the 36th Regiment on the night of 8-9 February.  The Regiment was relieved by trains of the 320th Regiment, 79th Volks Grenadier Division.  7:05pm-P.O.W. from the 2nd Battalion, 915th Regiment, says their mission was to reoccupy the bunkers northwest of Niedersgegen on the night of 9-10 February.  They were captured from the bunkers.  7:23pm-Twelve rounds of artillery hit northeast of Dillengen at 5:55pm.  7:32pm-I&R Observation Post #2 reports ten German artillery shells (150mm) hit Hoesdorf and vicinity at 2:10pm, azimuth estimated at 10 degrees, 4,000 yards.  10:00pm-Small arms fire from pillboxes and dug in positions.  Mortar and artillery continue on our expanding bridgeheads throughout the period.  Beisdorf cleared of Germans by 10:00pm.  Moderate concentrations of artillery continue near Hoesdorf P9343 and Wallendorf P9642.
