Feb. 12 -9:55am-Mortar, small arms and artillery fire all morning at 9644. 11:15am-Fourteen rounds of 105mm artillery hit near Wallendorf at 8:50am. 11:16am-Thirty five to forty rounds of artillery fell in Wallendorf, in one concentration. 11:43am-The Germans may be forming a counterattack near 958443. 11:56am-An unknown number of 150mm artillery rounds falling near 952421, as well as Wallendorf, from the north. 12:32pm-Battalion concentration of Germans in Hoesdorf at 11:40am. Shells also hit Hoesdorf at 11:04 and 11:10am. Eighteen rounds of nebelwerfer landing at 923452, from 940455. 12:30pm-German artillery fell near 961429, 960433, and 992421 at 11:15am. 12:32pm-Twenty rounds of artillery, estimated as 150mm, fell northeast of Hoesdorf at 9:30am. 12:33pm-Interpretations of aerial photos indicate a three-gun medium artillery battery at L034506, a three-gun medium artillery battery at L034506, a three-gun battery of heavy anti-aircraft guns at 2405058, a three-gun light anti-aircraft gun battery position occupied at 04505249. 12:34pm-One battery of four to five guns located at 952466. One battery of six guns at 96754855 and 96704880. 12:36pm-Small arms fire from pillbox at 21876. Reported that all pillboxes are occupied. 12:41pm-Ten rounds of 150mm artillery fell near 937430 at 10:46am. Unknown number of 150mm artillery rounds hit near 952421 and also in Wallendorf, coming from the north. 12:45pm-One medium artillery gun is located at L00525439. One medium artillery gun is located at L00705432. 2:00pm-Artillery concentrations on map sheets 6103 and 6104 were captured by the Germans. No concentrations issued on these sheets up to 1:30pm, February 12th will be used. 1:50pm-Ballendorf cleared of Germans. 2:25pm-Twelve rounds of artillery and twelve nebelwerfer rockets hit near the high grounds at 9544. 2:40pm-Several concentrations estimated 105 mm, fell near Hoesdorf at 1:45pm. 2:43pm-I&R Observation Post #1 reports eighteen rounds of German artillery fell near Wallendorf at 1:27pm, from the northeast at approximate range of 5,000 to 6,000 yards. 3:35pm-Bridge at 96435139 has a possible machine gun in the small patch of woods. 4:34pm-I&R Observation Post #2 reports three rounds of 150mm artillery hit near Hoesdorf from the north at 2:20pm. 5:25pm-I&R Observation Post #1 reports one round of white phosphorus came from the west of Beisdorf. 6:42pm-Suspected battery position at 934478. 7:05pm-Sixteen men and one officer dressed in German uniform seen at 8427, heading toward this area, walking and armed-seen this evening. 7:10pm-Twenty three P.O.W.'s from H.Q. Company, 2nd Battalion, 57th Regiment and Command Post of the 57th Regiment in Obersgegen, 1st Battalion, 57th Regiment in Viellen and 2nd Battalion in Veandon. 7:22pm-German battery at 04174244. 9:30pm-Heavy resistance encountered by our forces from pillboxes and dug-in positions. Moderate concentrations of mortar and artillery hit both on the front lines and along near the crossing sites. Rain during most of the period.
Feb. 13 -9:50am-Vehicle and foot troops moving along the road at 997470 to 970510-also some horse-drawn artillery. 10:10am-One ME109 in sector "B", flying east to west, low, at P8741. 10:15am-One ME109 flying east to west at P9536. 10:19am-Eight to ten horse-drawn vehicles, two trucks and fifty to sixty men going southeast into Frielingen. There is considerable traffic on that road at all times. 10:24am-Four vehicles observed going south on the road at 977470 and 970510. 10:25am-One ME109 at 8077 going southwest. 10:50am-One jet propelled plane is firing on our artillery liaison plane. 10:54am-Unknown number of planes flying low over Dillengen at approximately 10:20am. 11:10am-Twelve rounds of artillery landing near P941449, P947454 and P949454. 11:11am-Man laying mines at 993471. 11:20am-P.O.W. states that all houses in Benels P8951 are booby trapped and mined. Forty A.P. and A.T. mines are on the road between Viandon and Bettels. 11:27am-Ten men observed pulling a wagon into the draw at 977466, and were fired on effectively. 11:29am-German outside pillbox at 963437 at 9:22am. 11:31am-A column of horse-drawn artillery moving south near 990490. Two columns of mixed vehicles moving south from 971573 and 015532 at 10:00am. 11:45am-Heavy traffic on southeastern road going into Frielingen, consisting of horse-drawn vehicles. 1:28pm-One German tank went into line of trees at 993433, at 1:25pm. One fully-tracked vehicle of unidentified type entered the woods at 973466. 2:10pm-Large S-mines at 941437-northeast to the top of the hill at 950444-tripwires from all the mines are very sensitive. 2:13pm-Ringel mines located on the trail at 009414 and main road west of there-has two craters. 2:23pm-One more S.P. gun with three foot-troops following moved northwest out of Hammerdingen. 2:27pm-Seven to eight trucks observed on the road at 997439-German troops eating there. 3:37pm-Tracked vehicle observed at 997439. 3:38pm-P.O.W. reports two guns at P971482, two more guns at 971490, and a battery at 967492. 3:50pm-Twenty five vehicles moving south at 01575328. Many vehicles moving south at 9854. Road blocked at 998435. 4:30pm-Observed gun flashes at the edge of the woods at 985475. 5:07pm-Observed fire from German gun position at 971454. 5:07pm-Two trucks and light traffic moving southeast into Frielingen. 5:12pm-Anti-Aircraft gun at 005475 at 2:45pm. German gun at 94215195. 5:55pm-Concentration of 300 vehicles and armored cars at 0159 at 5:15pm. Some of the column moving south. 5:59pm-Twelve rounds of H.E. landed 400 yards north of Ammellingen. Two smoke shells land in town. 6:00pm-Two horse-drawn artillery pieces, one truck-drawn artillery piece, three to four automobiles and troops moving south and east from Lahr. Much artillery at pillbox southwest of Lahr at 4:20pm. Four tanks sighted at 994468 at 4:45pm. 6:15pm-Two German horse-drawn artillery pieces and one truck pulling artillery pieces going northeast on the road at 965505, at 2:50pm. 7:25pm-P.O.W. reports a minefield on the left side of the road leading north at 0044220 and 000426-thirty meters deep, one kilometer long, fenced by wire. 9:30pm-Ammeldingen cleared of Germans by noon. Small arms and mortar resistance continued heavily from pillboxes and dug-in positions. Artillery moderate on forward area and along river. Weather clearing up, but cloudy." |
